The Moore I See the Less I Know

May 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

Lately, I’ve been trying to explain the success of this man.mm1No matter how you feel about his politics, you have to admit that there’s something a little off about it.When I go to a job interview, I go to great lengths to appear presentable and professional. I wear nice clothes and dress shoes, shave, try to sit up straight, and I certainly don’t wear a baseball hat. I can imagine that I would try even harder to look nice if I were speaking in a film festival or a television interview. Michael Moore, on the other hand, looks like this.mm2Also, he’s fat.Can you wrap your head around it?Compared to my political views, his are relatively mainstream. I find it hard to believe that in all of America, they couldn’t find a more presentable emotional socialist.I mean, I’ve done some directing before. It’s not that difficult. And I’m not even a liberal arts major.prescottSure, he wants to bring Americans to his line of thought, but the dundie of documentaries is the Palme d’Or. Now, think about it. If you were an anti-american french intellectual who would you want to appeal to your anti-Americanism?This guy?mm3Or this guy?guvPerhaps his slobbish demeanor is an asset. People who think that Americans are fat, obnoxious, unhealthy a-holes would love to hear that viewpoint validated by an American. Especially a fat, obnoxious, unhealthy, a-holish American. Can we generalize that phenomenon? The representatives of a special interest group will often display the worst stereotypes of that group. It doesn’t make their message any more effective, but it does give them more attention.Richard Dawkins does a good job of convincing Atheists that they made a rational choice, but he fails to explain that choice to Theists, perhaps because he comes across as angry, offensive, and generally unaware of the effects his words have on others.   Both leave the presentations feeling like they have a good set of beliefs.I feel like I’m stealing all the fun.  Leave your own examples in the comments below.
